The advent of autonomous vehicles (AVs) and advanced communication technologies provide an unprecedented opportunity to mitigate the inefficient network loading attributed to human-driven vehicles (HVs) behaviour. It is expected that AVs can operate legally on the roads in the not too far future and coexisting AVs and HVs with different routing is a challenging issue in academia. If the AVs would not be controlled and navigated throughout the network properly, they could exacerbate congestion and reduce the benefits of driverless vehicles. At UNSW, my PhD research is aimed to model and manage the dynamics of mixed traffic flow in the presence of AVs and HVs in a large-scale network. One of the objectives is to maximize the network-wide benefits by controlling the routing of the minimum number of AVs in the mixed autonomy network. My journey through the PhD program is wonderful. I have been learning a lot, meeting a great bunch of people in my field, and experiencing teaching. Besides my research and teaching, I have also been collaborating with the industry and private entities as a network modeler. One of the greatest lessons I learned is to believe in yourself and keep your motivation high. Everything is possible and where there is a will, there is a way to accomplish it. I hope that in the future, I will be able to apply my theoretical knowledge in practical and real projects and improve mobility in the network.
