Recalibration of the BPR function for the strategic modelling of connected and autonomous vehicles
Transport modelling provides us with an invaluable tool that helps us understand travel behaviour changes on a citywide because of policy change or investment in transport infrastructure.
Strategic models contain predefined parameters calibrated against current behaviours.
The question is, do the current relationships between capacity and travel time still hold as the fleet transitions to Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs)?
Since 2012, TfNSW has invested in 700 projects, and proposed 292 projects over the next 40 years. With an emerging technology like CAVs, the expected benefits/impacts of our infrastructure investment become unclear if we do not adequately understand its impact on the traffic network.
Esta Qiu rCITI PhD candidate (and Consultant at SCT Consulting), Dr Navreet Virdi, Dr Hanna Gryzybowska & Prof. S. Travis Waller, have recently published a research paper titled “Recalibration of the BPR function for the strategic modelling of connected and autonomous vehicles” for the Transportmetrica B: Transport Dynamics journal. This paper modified a volume delay function (BPR) to incorporate CAV market penetration, enabling testing at different future horizons. This highlights the potential benefits from recalibrating existing models and reinforces the need to think beyond our current transport planning approaches when different technologies are coming.
